Playwriting

I had the best time watching my fifth graders perform plays adapted from folk tales. They worked with an artist in residence for several weeks to write their own scripts and then perform the plays in front of the school and invited parents. I am so proud of their hard work! I recorded the performance and had them critique it for the elements of drama and theater we had worked on in class.

The idea of integrating the arts into the classroom was new to me as of two years ago. Now it has changed the way I look at teaching and the learning of my students. I find my class much more engaged while learning and having fun. I love bringing the arts to my students and giving them an appreciation for something other than multiple choice questions. Teaching through the arts has been proven to reach learners with different learning styles and  help students develop critical thinking skills. In my opinion anything that does that deserves serious attention. Arts integration may not be right for every lesson but there are many opportunities to bring art, dance, drama, and music into your classroom and have fun!
